On March 20, 2025 the Infectious Disease (ID) Alliance hosted its first webinar for the Zoonotic Diseases Committee titled "Salmonella Under the Microscope: Tackling Outbreaks and Enhancing Food Safety in Europe". The webinar brought together global experts, policymakers and researchers to explore collaborative approaches for addressing Salmonella infection in Europe.

Salmonella remains one of the leading causes of foodborne illnesses in Europe, with outbreaks posing threats to public health and economic stability. In an era of heightened global trade and antibiotic resistance, combating Salmonella demands innovative science and coordinated action. With over 87,000 confirmed Salmonella cases annually in Europe, the pathogen continues to challenge food safety frameworks. Factors like globalized supply chains, underregulated poultry industries, and antimicrobial resistance exacerbate its prevalence. Advancements in genomic surveillance, public health campaigns, and policy enforcement provide hope for mitigating its impact.

The floor was handed over to the speakers, who each discussed their organisations and their role in the field of One Health. The speakers and their topics of discussion were as follows:

  • Dr. Carmen Savelli (from WHO): WHO’s global approach to strengthening food borne disease surveillance and response.

  • Dr. Steen Ethelberg (from SSI): Salmonella outbreak investigations in Denmark.

  • Dr. Marianne Chemaly (from ANSES): From poultry flocks to public health: Investigating Salmonella outbreaks in France.

After the presentations of the speakers, a Q&A session followed where the webinar participants had the opportunity to ask their questions to the speakers. The webinar ended with a summary of key takeaways, the outlining of next steps and the highlight of the Call to Action against Salmonella infections for a safer food system in Europe. IDA would like to thank all the speakers and participants for contributing to such an insightful and timely discussion. The feedback and comments discussed at the webinar will be incorporated into IDA's policy strategy.
